Note: On December 20, 2018, the GPE will be retiring. Students seeking admission into the Radio/Television, Advertising-Public Relations, and Journalism majors within the Nicholson School of Communication (NSCM) at UCF, should register for the Accuplacer exam starting January 2, 2019.
The Grammar Proficiency Exam (GPE) is a placement test for students seeking admission into the Radio/Television, Advertising-Public Relations, and Journalism majors within the Nicholson School of Communication at UCF.
The total time limit is 35 minutes. It is a two part, standardized and national paper-and-pencil exam that consists of the following:
- Part 1 - effectiveness in conveying exact meanings
- Part 2 - word usage, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization
While there is no official study guide, "Elements of Style" has been used by students to prepare
Review all GPE information and University Testing Center policies.
Submit written documentation of a documented disability from Student Accessibility Services to make accommodated testing arrangements at least two weeks prior to your scheduled test date. Contact UTC for more information.
Complete the registration process a minimum of one day prior to the test date (providing there are no special testing arrangements).
Complete registration and payment online.
After completing the registration process, check your email for the test registration confirmation. The test registration confirmation is required and must be presented on test day to be admitted to take your exam.
Arrive 15-minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. Students arriving more than 15-minutes late may not be admitted and will forfeit any costs paid.
You are required to bring two forms of identification. Your IDs cannot be expired and must be in the name in which you are registered to test.
Primary ID: Must be a government-issued, non-expired photo ID. Acceptable documents include a driver license, passport, state-issued identification card, or military identification.
Secondary ID: Must have a photo OR signature, such as a Social Security Card, student ID, employee ID, or a debit/credit card in the examinee's name.

If the exam is not passed on the first attempt, students may enroll in a remediation writing course. Students should consult with the Nicholson School of Communication for a list of acceptable remediation courses. If the remediation course is completed with a grade of “B” or higher, then it is not necessary to retake the exam. If the remediation course is completed with a grade of “B-“ or lower, then the student may opt to retake the exam. Students have a maximum of two (2) attempts on the Grammar Proficiency Exam. A score of 75% is considered passing. GPE results are available after 1:30 PM on the Friday of the week that you took the exam. Results may be available sooner if you take the exam during the first week of classes for the semester.
